Default Seat pedistal mounting question?

Hello all
I have read that Mariah used a metal backing plate for their pedistal captains chairs; however, while removing mine i noticed that there were two sets of mounting holes as one set seemed to be stripped out because I couldn't get the screw to tighten. Is it possible that someone before me remounted these chairs and didn't use the right bolt and now i'm just not getting into the metal plate? This seems unlikely as the screws that came out are at least 2 1/2 inches long. Or should I just go back in with a little larger screw and retap the metal plate? What should the length of my mouting screw be for these chairs? Thanks.

There is a 12" x 12" aluminum backing plate there under the floor. I swapped out my sleeper seat for a pedestal mounted bucket last spring. I checked with one of the other members (Mariah Trooper) who kindly measured a bolt for me. He advised the following:

My measurements show 1/4" bolts with a 3/8" hex head, 2 3/4" long, with a pan washer followed by a 1/16" rubber washer. The bolts were galvanized course thread....When I put it back in, I think I stripped the bolt when I tightened it down over the rubber washer...so be careful!

I located the plate with a metal finder, drilled holes & used the above although i had the same problem Ryan had with 2 bolts. Repairing that is one of my spring jobs when i get the boat out of storage.

I have two bolts free spinning where the seat pedestal meets the deck. Though the rest of the bolts are well tightened and hold good, a nagging voice (mine) tells me to do something about the free spinning ones.

Do I go one size higher and retap them ?
