Got to have lights!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyone know where I can get a light switch for my running and instrument lights for a 1994 Talari Z210??????????::D
|
Try these sources:
http://www.ig4x4.com/cat23_1.htm and on EBay motors there is a dealer called Great Lakes Skipper with these links; Here's the accessory switches: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=320189685895 and the blank lighted switches: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=320207716137 here's a anchor/nav switch http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=370026816926 Note that they don't list the Carling part number on there. They list a GLS part number. (copied from Z275's post of March 03rd...) You can also do a search on our website for "Carling Contura rocker switches". |

Hi Paul, If you mean the round knob switch next to the ignition, then what your looking for is a three position rotary switch made by Sierra and it's available from iboats. Click here or call 1-800-914-1123 The switch on our Mariahs comes with the optional light module mounted on the shaft before the knob: 1) main switch body w/ Left on, center off, right on, 2) light module w/two lights and 3) knob w/clear lens. Part number for your switch body and knob is MP78730 and if you need the light module as well it's MP78910 WetWilly |
Thanks for the link - any chance you have a similar source for the rheostat next to it?
Thanks in advance |

Sorry bdbyrnes, the second picture is not a rheostat, it's the light (illumination) module that sits on the switch shaft to indicate the switch position at night.
(OK, now I feel real stupid... Two and half hours after I posted this reply, Wham! I realized you weren't talking about the picture but rather the one on the dash...Duh!) I am still trying to locate the rheostat dimmer switch. (If it's out there, I'll find it!) I'll try to get under the dash later and see if my rheostat has any MFG sticker or part numbers on it One last note, on our Talari and some of the other Mariahs, this same style switch operates the bilge blower. It's a simple on/off rotary and it does not have a light module, the part # is MP78710 WetWilly |
switches
On my Talari, I have two switches there. The one on the left controls the nav. and instrument panel lights. The one on the right is the rheostat for dimming the instrument lights. I took my light switch out and found some corrosion coming from inside the switch. Only one terminal is getting power when the sitch is on. So, I rerouted both my nav. and instrument light wires and switch position light wire to that one post. Nothing is getting hot and all my lights work now. Just can't dim instrument lights. I would like to replace that switch with a correct one, if there is one out there. I did'nt notice any manufacturer name or part# on switch.

Hi Paul- We have the same setup and thanks for sharing since I have been behind there with a wire tester and after all these years of owning the boat I was too focused on other things to troubleshoot the switch.
FYI--- I pulled out the rheostat and I will double check, but fairly certain there was no part number.... I'll walk out and check again. :) |
Hi WetWilly --- I am going to order the switch today and - I know this sounds stupid - but the light inidcator module is to visually show what 'mode' the switch is in: i.e. red for nav, green for nav/dash.
Am I catching on? Thanks, Brent |
Hi Bret,
Yup, you got it, that's all the module does! Now for the dimmer switch.... I removed my dimmer and wouldn't you know it, it isn't made by Sierra, that's for sure! It looks like it was made "in house" and they added some heat shrink tubing to the end of the shaft so a Sierra knob would fit on it so all the dash knobs would match. http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h2...erwithknob.jpg Now for some better news, it's a simple two wire affair consisting of a half dozen resisters, couple of transistors, hand full of diodes, two capacitors and the rheostat. http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h2...omponents2.jpg http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h2...omponents1.jpg Now, all I have to do is source the transistors and rheostat, and possibly Radio Shack for the rest and we can repair our own dimmers or maybe it's just easier to just replace it with a newer one and remount the Sierra knob on it as Mariah did. Re: Got to have lights!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WetWilly-
Any luck ever finding a suitable rheostat? I have the light switch next to it working... Thanks, Brent |

I'll be taking it over to a electronic component shop not too far away from where I live to see if I can match the parts. I promise this time to let you know. Is yours dimmer board not working because of the rheostat? |
Re: Got to have lights!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, the dimmer is dead. Thanks to this thread I did replace the three way switch (Bow/Stern - Off - Bow/Stern/Gauges) Friday evening and it works great.
Thanks! |
Re: Got to have lights!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Brent, I visited one of my sources and they have been able to locate the equivalent components with the exception of the Pot (turns out it's a potentiometer and not a rheostat). They said matching the value isn't an issue, it's the bushing (threaded part of the shaft) that's the problem, they can't locate a Pot with the same bushing length that even comes close to the one on our boards. So that's where I'm at right now... still searching and since there isn't a manufacture's name or brand on the Pot, it's a challenge (where are those guys on CSI..they should be able to locate this Pot... :big_tongue:). If you're sure your Dimmer Pot is bad, would you mind sending the dimmer assembly to me? I would like to examine a few options for the Pot which means I'll need to remove and possibly dissemble it. I would use mine but since it's working, I'd hate to put it out of commission if you know what I mean. Let me know and if it's OK with you, I'll PM you. WetWilly |
Re: Got to have lights!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sure!
PM me your address. Brent |
Re: Got to have lights!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am having the same problem with the dash lights and have the same circuit board above my ignition switch. Any idea where to get this circuit board or what component needs fixed on it?

Re: Got to have lights!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was looking at the wiring last night and it looks like the circuit board may have two functions. One function is for dimming the instrument lights and the other function may be for the SOS function on the navigation light.

Re: Got to have lights!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Bret, did you ever send that dimmer unit yet?
WetWilly |
Re: Got to have lights!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have since disconnected the dash lights from the circuit board and ran the power wire down to an accessory switch that was not being used.
After seeing the dash lights finally light up there appears to be no reason to have a dimmer on the dash lights since they are not that bright. They look great with full current so I am not going bother with adding a dimmer. Jeff B |
Re: Got to have lights!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FYI: My lights didnt work so I dismantled the switch and found two corroded copper rods inside. A quick go with some wire wool and a little longer trying to get it all back together and now I have lights. Quicker than trying to track down a new switch!

Re: Got to have lights!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would have gone this route but my switch knobs are all glued on and I was afraid that I would break the switch getting it out. I am not sure if they are always glued on or if this is something a previous owner did.

Hi Jeff, looks like something the previous owner did. You couldn't install the switch if the knobs were glued on (knob too big to fit through the hole :D). WetWilly |

Re: Got to have lights!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It stands to reason that the factory could have glued the knobs on after the switches were installed.:shakehead:

Re: Got to have lights!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
True, but then you'll have your situation, can't remove the switch because the knobs are too big to fit through the holes :shakehead: WetWilly |
Re: Got to have lights!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good way for the factory to sell more switches. Wouldn’t be the first time an OEM made it difficult to service a part.
I would gather from what you are saying though, that on other Mariah boats the factory didn’t typically glue on the switch knobs so it must have been a previous owner. Jeff B. |

As SEMIJim said, "it's not the way Mariah did things..." So I would say it was someone else... WetWilly |
Re: Got to have lights!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Are you sure they are glued on, mine were very tight and I had to lever them off with a screwdriver (very carefully)
|
Re: Got to have lights!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
same here, a very careful push, tug and pull, and they popped off, no glue!
