Mounting a GPS Plotter
1 Attachment(s)
Hey guys,
I picked up a GPS unit for my 94 Talari, and Im wondering about the mounting location. I hate the thought of 3 screws into the dash... :shakehead:but dont see too many alternatives... The unit is sitting on the dash in the attached picture. Any suggestions ? Thanks! |
I have a hand held unit. This way I don't have to worry about mounting it somewhere to obstruct the gauges and I dont have to worry about theft of the unit being visible behind the windshield.
just my .02 :) |
Hi 300sflyer,
This is the same issue I have as I want to install the Garmin 545S (looks about the same size as your's) but there isn't enough real estate between the wheel and gauges where it won't be blocking something and the rake of the windshield prevents me from mounting it above the dash. I've been looking at mounting brackets that clamp to the rails to see if I could attach it to the windshield brace rail and allow me to position it for the best view whether I'm sitting or standing. This would also allow me to swing it around for the passenger (navigator) to observe when I need to focus on piloting. I'm still looking for a system strong enough to prevent the GPS unit from vibrating too much as it get hard to read when it's moving around. I'll let you know when I find it... WetWilly |

But for now, the gf plays around with it and it keeps her occupied. I reference depths every now and then. We did find a new anchorage location. :wink_thumbup: |
Problem solved!... With a home made aluminum bracket. Pictures will be added later today once the paint dries, and its installed.;)

Awesome! :wink_thumbup:
Getting creative is the cheaper way of doing it. |
Ok, here are the pics. I think it looks pretty good. :D

I have a lowrance 5300c that is a similar size to the one in the pic... I got a swivel ball mount and installed it to the right of the dashboard, above the CD player. I like the placement since I can angle the display up when I'm standing up... no pics, but I'll take one soon.

Well done there Mike ! :wink_thumbup:
It is over far enough that the trim gauge is still visible enough to read, but not over too far that it blocks passage to the bow. |
Thanks Ryan! I really dreaded puting the mounting screws down through the dash.
Its as far over to the left as it can go, without blocking the walk way threw the windshield. The trim gauge is "just" visable from the drivers seat. ;) |
