Water Pump Replacment- Alpha Gen2 DIY??

All: I am considering doing this myself. The manual talks of two "special tools" oil seal driver Part Number 91-817569, looks like a two sided driver for setting seals at correct depth, and PN 2681657A2 to replace the pump shaft water pump seal.

Outdrive is 1998 Alpha 1 Generation Two. The water pump is the sea water pump with the Stainless housing.

Question: Can Special tools be made? Any recommendations on purchase? Pictures of special tools?

Tips traps techniques and suggestions ALWAYS welcome!

Many Thanks

Hi Dave,

I don't know if this will be the same for the 98 Alpha but accordind to the 97 alpha manual, it states that: "NOTE: Water Pump Face Seal Tool is not available separately, 26-816575A2 is a kit part number which includes the tool and the face seal." which is the tool I believe you're referring to.

I would contact your local Merc parts dealer and inquire if your kit includes this tool (91-817569) as I believe the 97 and 98 gen II's are the same.

Good luck,
WetWilly

P.S. here is a link to Sterndrives.com, they mention the tool that comes in the kit: "The Gen II water pump kit comes with a little slinger seal installation tool. It's really just a small plastic cup. ".
