Fuel gauge not working

My fuel gauge quit working last summer. It always shows that I have half a tank no matter if I just filled it up or almost empty. How can I fix this problem?

I'd start by checking the wiring to the gauge itself. Make sure contacts aren't corroded. Then I'd check the actual fuel sender unit, which is located on the top of the gas tank.

This year my gauge shows half a tank when full now..?? but still works somewhat (I see it bouncing around on the water and it is below half tank after a day or two of use). I won't run out, but I don't like carrying 60 gallons around (I used to carry between 15-35).

Anyone know of any calibration or had any similar problem? I guess I will inspect connections.....maybe even add the device i read about in another thread that stops the jittery gauge.

Sounds like maybe the float is stuck or fuel logged. My sending unit went out last year but it always showed empty, not half full. But I guess that could still be another item to check.

I bought a universal sending unit from West Marine and modified with some of the old pieces. It was difficult to fine tune it to the tank, but I think I have it perfect now.

As of today mine is stuck at 1/4 tank. :( I will look into mine on my next trip out to the boat. I hope it is just a wire. What can you do you want to play you have to pay.:wink_thumbup:

Hey Mark.........did you ever install the capacitor for your fuel gage? Mine is jittery, so I purchased the 68,000 capacitor. If you installed one, how did you access the fuel gage. We have the same boat, so I wanted to see if you have any suggestions.

Thx
