Re: Depth finder

Not working at all or unrealistic depths. My factory one has correct depths every once and awhile but most of the time it is way off.

Re: Depth finder

If its mounted in the bilge area and is a thru hull unit, its likely that it has come loose in the epoxy mount (age/wear & tear) and wont read at all.

Re: Depth finder

What make is the head unit? My boat's original Lowrance unit was defective when I bought the boat a year ago. it turned out to be a defective transducer. A new transducer (shoot-thru-hull epoxy glued into hull) fixed it. But I got greedy and tried to fix the lights inside and ruined it, very delicate connections at that age.

You can test the transducer to see if it has gone open-circuit by putting a small AM radio near it while the depth finder is switched on. The radio should make an easily heard clicking sound if ok. Best frequency to use is 550-600 KHz. If the head unit is working but the transducer is open, the clicking will be very faint.

Where was your transducer located?

It was under the engine. There was a cutout in the inner hull to allow it to be glued to the outer hull.
