trim

Hello everyone, i took my boat out last weekend and the trim/tilt wouldn't lift the stern up. it will goes down but once i tries to raise it up, it just make a clicking noise.
I am thinking its my Trim Solenoid Relay Switch. How do i find out what part to get, i look but there's a p/n on the tilt trim motor.

Tilt motor is a SAE J1171
Stern drive is a Alpha 1 Gen 2

1994 Tarli 4.3 L

Thanks!

Re: trim

It's easier for the motor to go down then be raised....do you have an external switch on the transom where u can lift it up and down? Try that...my Yamaha has one of works 100% my throttle handle works 75% of the time.. next I would check to see if u have any leaks...see if your arms ( the polished part) are wet

Mine is inboard, it doesn't have an external trim switch,, but I know what you're talking about, cuz my brother Carolina Skiff have one. There aren't any leaks on the arms, that's how I got it to lift up, I took the outer arm bolt out and tie stern drive to my boat.

If one solenoid is clicking, the most likely cause is a bad contact at the 110 Amp fuse on the solenoid bracket. Even though that fuse only runs power to the motor, the same connection provides power to the 20 amp solenoid circuit. That connection and fuse will draw more current in the up direction than in the down direction. Also check the connection of the wire from the ground bolt to the trim motor.

Another less likely cause is a bad connection in the 20 Amp inline fuse. Remove the fuse and reinstall it into the fuse holder.

Re: trim

took all the wires out (2 batteries) reconnected the ground wire (ground was rusted from the engine side) ran two separate grounds to the engine. Replace two new relay switches, everything started up and running!

Thanks!

I just replaced my solenoids because I was getting the clicking sound as well. I ordered two new solenoids for up and down , they worked like a champ. I also blew the lines out with brake cleaner and replaced fluid with 10w30 engine oil. What a difference.

Read the Trouble Shooter in the General Maintenance Section. Its not a difficult fix.
