Default First time boat owner

I bought a 2001 Mariah Shaba 182 this is my first boat and I don't know what to do. I took it out this weekend and everything seems to work fine. Does anyone have a manual for this boat that is like a car owners manual. That tells you what to turn on and when to do certain things. I don't even have anything to tell me what types of oil and fluid to use. Thanks for any help. I have a 4.3 Mircruser

Buy a seloc mercruiser book. Invaluable for maintenance on the engine and stern drive. Great books. Contact your local us Powe squadron for boating advice. Usps.org. gratis organization and education on boating. Have fun.

Contributing members get access to wiring diagrams for your boats electrical. My understanding is the manual that came with the boat was pretty basic.

I definitely would get the seloc book for your mercruiser. Fluids, maintenance, repair etc. Very detailed and designed for the diy persons not a technician. I recommend a boater safety course through us power squad. You will meet some great folks and save on your insurance. I'm pretty much a novice myself and getting info anywhere I can.

    Happy boating.

I got a seloc manual and passed an AZ boating course. For instance there is a button on the throttle that shows trim down and trailer from what I have read there should be trim limit for when your on the water. Am I just not seeing it right or is my option down and up tell I stop?

You trim up the regular trip all the way then use the trailer trim to raise it more. Once on the water you lower it all the way. You only use the trim button in the water and it does have a limit built in so you don't raise it out of the water. You only use the trailer button when out of the water.

I would still look up a local power squad. You will find a lot of knowledge there along with getting a vessel safety check for your boat etc. They have been very helpful to me.

Another dumb question what do you guys think about a rubber drain plug that you inset and twist tight compared to the standard brass plug that you thread and tighten

I have wondered the same. I have a brass one, but just not sure if I trust the rubber ones

The rubber ones are fine if you are trailering. If you are leaving the boat in a slip I would use the brass pipe plug with Teflon tape.
