5.7 merc spring tune up

Still a ways off but I'm always planning. I'd like to replace the spark plugs in this 5.7 come spring time, before I take it out for a spring test run. Can anyone recommend what plugs I should be getting for it and where to buy? I may also replace the belt, it has a good squeak to it before it gets warmed up even though it looks fine. I'll check the tensioner pulley while the belt is off.

Appears to be original motor with right around 400 hours.

Anything else I should be doing in the spring? Does the carb need any attention? Previous owner gave me a rundown of the maintenance schedule he kept but I really want to make sure everything is fresh. I had the shop change the drive oil, impeller, fuel filter etc when it was in to get winterized...

Thanks!

Never too soon to think about boating!
You can look up the part numbers for the stuff you need HERE.

For the spark plugs you might want to try Rock Auto. I got a box of 10 for way less than 8.

I just did the plugs, rotor, cap, wires tune up on mine last spring. Everything looked good for 15 years old and 500hrs. I managed to find some really good prices at NAPA. You have plenty of time to shop around.

And for the belt squeak, check that the is no rust on any of the pulley wear surfaces. If you do have rust try wire brushing or sanding and the apply a fresh coat of engine paint. You will be surprised how quiet you can make it.

Thank you both for the suggestions and links. I'll check the pulley surfaces and see what needs to be done.

Something else I noticed, the shop left this boat either in gear or throttle about half engaged in neutral, is this normal for storing a boat over the winter? I left it like it was thinking there is a reason behind it? I meant to ask but didn't notice until I got home.

Reviving this cause it's almost that time! I figure about a month from now I'll be safe to put in and go for a spring test run.

Can someone enlighten me about carbs... do they need any attention come spring time? Adjustments or cleaning? I really wish I knew more about carb setups.

Thanks for the help.

Does she run rich? Idle okay? Hesitate under throttle?
