98 202z voltage gauge questions

Hello all,
Cranked up the boat for a great fall day at the lake today. Hadn't been in it for 3 weeks or so. We always leave a trickle charger on the battery to maintain. Somehow that got disconnected for the last couple of weeks. Started it up out of the water to make sure we didn't have battery issues. Started and ran fine.
Got to the water and it acted a little sluggish at first. Particularly about the middle of the power band. Ran pretty well from there on out.
Got to looking at the voltage guage. Usually it reads 13-14 amps. When we left the lake it was flickering near 8-9 until I gave it some throttle. Then it went to 12, and still continued to flicker. Motor ran fine.
So...what are your thoughts if any? Bad battery, bad alternator, bad guage? None of the above? Likely won't be out too many more times this season... I guess just wondering if I need to be concerned about being the only guy in the lake and having a breakdown. Thanks.

Id start with the basic stuff. Are battery terminals clean? How old is battery? Have the battery tested and go form there would be me first steps.
