Leaking Gear Oil

A few weeks ago I changed the water pump and housing on my 94 Alpha 1 Gen 2 outdrive. I used an original OEM water pump kit, which included the impeller and the new housing. I had no idea when it was last done, so I figured it was time.

I followed the service manual I have to do this and all seemed to go fairly smoothly. The outdrive is stored verticaly in my shop, and about 3 weeks later, I notice oil running out through the water pickup holes.

Any ideas on where I may have gone wrong? It was not leaking before I did this.:(

Thanks in advance!

There is an oil seal that goes in during re-assembly of the lower unit. Did that get installed or perhaps improperly seated or pinched?

I assume you mean the the small seal that goes in between the upper and the lower? Yup its there... I made sure of that.:wink_thumbup:

Found the problem...

The base I replaced below the pump assembly, has an inner and outer o-ring to provide the seal. The outer ring is damaged. I guess I must have done it somehow when I installed it... :shakehead:

Im sure a new one will fix the problem.:wink_thumbup:

It's easy enough to do for sure. Hopefully the new seal will solve your problem.
