Need to replace starter 7.4L
 

Anyone replaced the starter on there 7.4L mercruiser? I have a 1996 24' talari with a 454. Its extremely tight, what needs to be removed to gain access to the starter?

jgreen did replace the starter on his 7.4 a couple of years ago. He did comment that the exhaust has to be removed to access it. You could always send him a private message to see if he can provide any other hints.

I can suggest also that this might be a good time to consider becoming a contributing member to the site so that you gain access to the necessary shop manuals. Here is a list of what is available.

I replaced my Starter on my 2000 Z272. It is quite painful. They are 9/16 bolts that hold the starter in place. I sat in the bilge and felt my way through it. The toughest part was holding the new starter and getting the bolts started.
