Problems with getting newly purchased boat operational.
I presently have two questions about a 1996 Mariah Talari 201 w/Mercruiser 5.7L w/Alpha One. First question is: Did this boat originally come with a belt driven water pump or just the standard water pump that comes on all 5.7L including automotive? Also, I got the engine running, but it will not shut off with the key. What could be wrong. Sorry to be so dumb, but I haven't had a boat in several years. I'm sure that it is probably something simple, but I can't figure it out. I don't have a wiring schematic, but I guess I may need to get one. Do you know if there are any wiring schematics available for this boat? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tom

Re: Problems with getting newly purchased boat operational.
Tom here is the wiring diag for the starting system.
Click on Merc Manuals on the main forum page(bottom of maint & repair section) and then go to the 5.0 & 5.7 manual. Click on "Electrical Systems" page 5 The manual also goes into further detail on your cooling system , but yes the "seawater pump" as they are called was available on your engine package. |
Re: Problems with getting newly purchased boat operational.
Thanks Colorado, for the reply. I've looked all over this site and haven't been able to access any manuals. I'm sure I'm just not doing something right. My boat does not have one of those pumps and I saw on YouTube that, that was an area that needed to be addressed, periodically, to change the impellor, but when I went looking for it, I discovered that it wasn't on my boat. Is that something I should worry about. Thanks, Tom

Re: Problems with getting newly purchased boat operational.
Nope , nothing wrong with your boat. You just don't have that system on your drive package. Your impeller is in the outdrive itself. And yes , if you don't know when it was last replaced........replace it.
To be completely honest , I can't tell you the diff in the two , but one of the guys will educate us both I bet:) At the top of the MOC page click on "forum" Go down the page til you get to "Maintenance and Repairs" Just below the last entry of "Yamaha , OMC , and other motors" you'll see the link for the mercruiser manuals. |

Re: Problems with getting newly purchased boat operational.
Just curious....how are you shutting it off if the key doesn't work? As far as where to look....starter solenoid/coil/distributor area. Something is wired wrong.

Re: Problems with getting newly purchased boat operational.
Welcome aboard Tom! I am no expert by any stretch, but I have changed a few impellers before. When you started the engine, did you put ear muffs on the bottom of the outdrive? Did water come back out with the exhaust? You said that you do not have a belt driven water pump so I am guessing your impeller would be located in the "foot" or bottom part of the outdrive. If water did circulate back out of the engine then that means your impeller is functioning, but if it has been sitting awhile, I would change it. The rubber fins will get brittle and you don't want that falling apart in there.

Re: Problems with getting newly purchased boat operational.
Husker_Fan, I debated on how to shut it off and I finally just pinched the fuel line shut and let it run out of gas. Csterner, I did use the ear muffs and yes, water did come out of the prop. I know that I have to change the exhuast bellow and I do intend to change the impellor. Just another question: How do you know if the gimbel ring (bearing) is good or bad?

Re: Problems with getting newly purchased boat operational.
Tom: If you have a look in this same section under the heading "General Maintenance" you will find 6 or 7 'stickys' that give you instructions on how to troubleshoot your starting system, your shift system, gimbal bearing etc. Keep us informed on how things go....i've never had a motor that didn't wanna shut off on me... :)

Re: Problems with getting newly purchased boat operational.
Tom ,
Did a little more research and it appears that all the Alpha drives have the impeller in the lower unit like yours and mine. All Bravo drives have the impeller pump running off either a belt or it is crank driven. Learn something new everyday I guess :) |
Re: Problems with getting newly purchased boat operational.
I just wanted to thank everyone for replying and for being so helpful. I am very glad that I heard about this site and became a member. It is really good to know that there is help available. I think I have purchased a pretty descent boat, but it has been setting for a couple of years and needs a lot of TLC. The good thing about it is, that it is all there and hasn't been cannibalized. Thanks again.
