I have a 1996 with a 5.7 engine with a plastic front timming cover. The engine is bad can i replace it with one out of a 1996 chevy P/U with a metal front cover?

Im not an engine expert, they will likely confirm that the rotation is opposite though.

I think you will find it wise and mandatory to stick with marine parts since there are many differences in the marine quality of the powertrain system.

I would stick with a marine engine.

Marine engine. All the components are marine grade, and one of the most important characteristics of marine engines are they are manufactured specifically with things like spark arrestors, flameproof parts, rust and corrosion inhibitors, and they're designed to work without causing any trouble in closed areas like engine compartments, where vapors and fumes can build up. One crank with an auto engine that causes a spark, and this could be you (see below)..... IF you're lucky enough to get away before it explodes.

Yes, Marine engines are more expensive. But there's a reason why. Don't cheap out if you value you and your passengers safety.
