Default Temperature is jumping between 120 and 200 or so degrees

While out on the river today, my power steering goes out and at the same time the temperature gauge starts jumping around between the above degrees. What is causing my power steering to go and what may be causing the temperature variance? Impeller? Are the two issues related or just coincidence? I bought this 2001 Mariah 180 Diablo, with a 135 horse Mercruiser 4 cylinder motor this spring. It is in impeccable conditon. I hope these are not major problems?

Check your belts first! I bet its the same belt for the Power steering and the water pump.

Thanks Zach, I looked closer, (too much excitement today) and did find that it was just a broken belt and it does run both the water pump and hydralic pump for the power steering. Issue fixed. Thanks again!!!
