need help changing alternators
I am currently changing alternators from a 96 350. The one that I took off has 5 wires running to it. My new alternator which was recomended by orielly auto parts has only 4 places to connect to.

Re: need help changing alternators
baker721,
First, are you installing a marine grade alternator? I advise you not to mess with automotive parts in a marine application. As for the wiring, take the alternator back and insist on a marine alternator with the same wiring requirements. Shabah 198 SE |
Re: need help changing alternators
Its a marine alternator built by wilson. Used the part# on the old alternator for reference and that's what they came up with

Re: need help changing alternators
Make sure that is a sealed case alternator, you do not want to cause a spark in the engine compartment.

Re: need help changing alternators
Okay pictures posted... The one I am trying to install is the wilson... The mercury is the old one. Does anyone know where the wires go

Re: need help changing alternators
Hard to say exactly, the two quick connects are easy. they go to the two similar connected wires(I believe these go to the gauge), the orange wire will mount to the large post, as this is the main load side power conductor to the charging system.;)
That orange wire looks like it has gotten hot and discolored the insulation, CUT THAT SECTION OUT. Get back to good wire and redo that connector! That will create resistance and heat.:shakehead: The other two wires are a mystery, does the one black one go to the grounding system? Where was it removed from on the old one? On a mounting bolt? Mine does not have one like that, but you need to be a bit more descriptive about where they were removed from on the old one I think to be more help. The one with the protective boot is definitely a + positive lead and not a ground or it would not have a protective boot, maybe it mounts along with the Orange on the load post? Not sure. Did they all have their own post on the old one? Please don't blame me if I blow up your boat!:D ttown and shabah are correct in their warnings, I am assuming since you said it was the mercruiser replacement that it is marine. |

this pic should help the orange wire I believe is hot. The black wire hooked to the top bolt. The wire with the boot hooked to the bottom right hand bolt. I looked on the inside and I couldnt see any wires running from that bolt. The two in the middle are the ex and s. I installed the alternator with the wires going where I thought they went. It was throwing the circut breaker when I would try to start it

Re: need help changing alternators
I just had this same issue last week with a $100 replacement alternator and it was two days before a big trip so I went to a boat shop and plunked down the $380 for the Merc part. Sucked at the moment but took all of about 15 mins to install and the piece of mind since has been great. There's my help! lol

Re: need help changing alternators
Ya I ended up taking mine back and switched it for one with five. There was an extra wiring harnesses involved which didn't come with the alternator.
