1995 Mariah Talari 11mph TOP Speed?????
I have a 1995 Mariah Talari 200. She is 20 foot with a 4.3 liter LX. I am currently running an aluminum 4 blade 14.0 inch with a 21 pitch. I put her on the water for the first time and she idles fine around 500 rpms and everything revs good in nuetral. When I go to take off with 4 adults she won't go on plane and maxes out at 2,500-2,600 rpms at around 11 mph.
To get it ready for spring, I drained the lower end and refilled, fresh oil and filter, new fuel filter, plugs, wires, cap, rotor and a coil . The only thing I can think of is having the carburator cleaned, rebuilt and adjusted. Anybody have any idea what might be wrong or ideas on where to start? |

Have the prop checked to see if the hub has spun.
btw...you did unhook the trailer....right? ;) |
Re: 1995 Mariah Talari 11mph TOP Speed?????
If the RPMs ar maxed out at 2500 - 2600 then the problem isn't a spun hub. It would rev up much higher and not go anywhere.
Was it four LARGE adults all sitting at the stern? Seriously, it sounds like fuel issue, is it fresh gas or if not, did it have stablizer in it last fall? Did the exhaust smell bad? |
Re: 1995 Mariah Talari 11mph TOP Speed?????
I tried rearranging everybody around from bow to stern. brought the nose down when adults were on the bow but made no difference to the rpms or speed.
I am not for sure how big the tank is or how much fuel was in it or how old it was. The guage read empty and I put 10 gallons of fresh gas in it before heading to the lake and the guage read 3/4 full. I replaced the fuel/water seperator, is there a smaller internal filter inside the carburator that I should have also replaced that might be clogged? |

It does sound like a fuel supply issue but it could also be electrical. Double check your new ignition wires to see that they are connected properly & supplying a spark to each of the plugs. Put your old coil back in & see if that makes a difference. Check each of the plugs to see if they are fouling. As for fuel supply, if the boat has been sitting for a long time & the fuel wasn't stabilized then it can gum up a fuel filter quickly. You said you replaced the fuel filter but i would have another look there. Did you install it with the arrow pointing in the right direction?. |

Hi sharpvet03, while we're on the subject of carbs, it almost sounds like a stuck or partially opening choke. Have you checked to see if the choke is sticking or opening fully when the motor's warmed up? Don't forget to check if the throttle plates open fully when you advance the throttle as well. WetWilly |
