96 shabah 180
I have a 1996 shabah and it won't start after I have been sitting in the water for a while. It starts fine off of the trailer and runs great but after we stop and hang out for a little bit it just won't start. It turns over but won't start all of the way. Sometimes, it will start and then die when we take it out of neutral.
Any ideas anyone? |
Re: 96 shabah 180
i would say its something with the carb. there is a choke set screw kinda deal on the carb and u could maybe adjust that. it has to be something about the engine being hot or warm when trying to start. im no pro but its just a suggestion.

Re: 96 shabah 180
I'd be careful messing with carb adjustments unless you know what you're doing! You could make it worse. You say after you stop for awhile and that doesn't describe how long. If it's just a short time, 10-15 minutes you might be overheating and the engine is still too hot-check your temps when running before you stop to make sure that isn't the problem. Engines are almost always harder to start after running hard and shutting off for a brief time and attempting to start them again.
If it starts okay when it's cold then your choke adjustment is okay. Take off the spark arrester and see what the choke plate looks like before starting. It should be closed-horizontal. Put the arrester back on, run the engine until it's warm, shut it off and take the arrester off and the plate should be vertical. If that's what it looks like, the choke is okay. Sometimes coils act up when hot also-this is something you should probably have a mechanic check out if you're not used to working on engines. We've only had our Talari for a year, so this is new to me. I did a lot of messing with cars in the old days when we had carburetors, points and other mechanical parts to engines instead of all the electronics we now have-it's much better now!! |
Re: 96 shabah 180
Thanks, I will check these things out. Someone else(a mechanic) told me that it might be the coils.
If there are any other suggestions please let me know. |
Re: 96 shabah 180
not sure if you solved your problem yet, I have a 97 180SE and had a no start issue after riding somewhere and found one of the pins on the fuel pump harness plug wasn't making good contact, motor ran great, then just wouldn't start, then ran great etc.

Re: 96 shabah 180
Not so long ago one of our members had a similar problem, but for the life of me I cant find the particular thread concerning his problems and how he solved it.
Perhaps you might be able to find it or someone here remembers that thread. Good luck |
Re: 96 shabah 180
Have you tried checking your neutral safety switch after you have driven for a while? What happens is when you move the throttle back to neutral before you shut off the boat it might not be contacting the switch all the way check the wiring behind the control for a loose connection. I had a similar problem to yours mine would start fine when I would first launch the boat and after we would stop and swim around for a while and try to restart the boat it would start and die and sometimes woud start and then backfire and die, after I would jiggle the throttle handle back and forth it would start and run perfect so I disconnected all the wires behind the throttle control and put all news connectors on the wires and used heat shrink to keep the wheather from corroding any more. I have not had any more problems with it since. let me know if this helps out good luck
