Exhaust bellows

I have a alpha 1 drive and noticed the exhaust bellows was detached on the inboard side I lowered the drive and reattached. When I raised the drive it came off the outdrive. I was looking at a replacement bellows then a reference to exhaust tube came up what is the difference and which is better. I have a 2001 Shabah 182 with a v6

Re: Exhaust bellows

I had the same thing happen to me and i chose the exhaust tube it is slightly louder than the original bellows because it is not perfectly sealed but when i flip the captains call switch it makes no difference anyways. The exhaust tube is also a whole lot cheaper and easier to replace. I did it on my 202 with 5.7 mpi mag and alpha one. I would have no reason to go back. The exhaust tube is only fastened on the one side and fits around the other when lowered.

Re: Exhaust bellows

Totally agree with car1379, I would never install an exhaust bellows again, total PIA. Go with the exhaust tube, it will last forever as it is under no stress when drive is up.

You are very lucky that that didn't break while you were driving it! If it did, the bilge would have overflowed, engine seized, and worst of all, your boat would be starting to sink so fast the bilge cant keep up! Thank you for reminding me to check mine!

Re: Exhaust bellows

That may be true of your drive shaft bellows but if your exhaust bellows comes off its really no big deal.

Re: Exhaust bellows

I was under the impression that even without the bellows nothing would happen since the engine exhaust manifold is above the water line

Re: Exhaust bellows

All the exhaust bellos does is connect the stern portion of the drive to the leg to direct the exhaust out the prop. If it is missing or comes off worst case is you get the black scum on the back of your boat more and its noisier.
