Troubleshoot help

New 92 mariah Diablo owner here.
4.3 mercruiser alpha one 262 CID.

Boat was running great today for about two hours when I decided to "ride some waves" after a few minutes of air time the boat acted like it wanted to stall out and wouldn't pickup beyond 3,000 rpm's. If I would try to run it WOT it would die. Fires right back up and more sounds healthy but it bounces around on idle from 3,000 rpm's down to 2,000 and back. I'm thinking a vacuum leak or a fuel issue but was hoping someone else has had this problem before. I took the air filter off and tried to manually run it back to the dock but couldn't get the boat beyond that 3,000 rpm mark without dying.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Troubleshoot help

Had a friend rebuild the carb, it was full of sand. How do I go about removing the sand from the fuel system without dropping the tank. The person who rebuild the carb had mentioned a fuel water separator I'm not sure what I'm looking for on the motor
