Mercruiser Power Steering Leak

I was told I may have a power steering cooler leak, it is a fast leak and keep the reservoir filled with fluid. First of all where is the power steering cooler located, does the motor need to be removed to fix or replace? I was told they would have to remove the lower unit and motor to get to it. Does it hurt the system if I continue to use if I keep the reservoir filled until I can get it fixed?

Having difficulty finding diagrams or instructions on the replacement of the steering cooler.

Re: Mercruiser Power Steering Leak

I just went through this on my Jubilee. Not sure what motor you have. I have a 4.3 and the cooler is at the top rear of the motor. It has 2 larger water lines and 2 power steering lines hooked to it. Once the lines are off, there is 1 bolt holding it to the block. On the jubilee, it can be accessed without removing any other parts. A mirror is helpful to see what you're working with back there.

On mine, I was loosing fluid, but nothing showing up in the bilge. To verify that it was the cooler that was leaking, I bought a hose barb, unhooked the input and output PS lines from the cooler and bypassed the cooler. I have run a few times since and fluid level has been steady so I'll be replacing the cooler.

A google search, then view images, and you'll have plenty of diagrams showing the layout.
