Naylor Boat Lift

Hey all,

I recently purchased a previously enjoyed Naylor vertical lift for my FS18. When I looked at the unit, I was assured the lift capacity was "around 3,600#".

Knowing the FS18 weighs in at 2,950 ish dry, I figured this would be adequate, albeit tight.

Well, most have probably guessed where this is going. It turns out the lift is rated to 3,000# max. I verified this with the manufacturer. yah........shudda done that first.

Has anyone been in or continues to be in this situation, that is, using a lift that is this close to the boat weight? Any idea where the fail point is?

I'm a structural tech guy and can tell you right now it's not the 5/16 ss cables. Might be the winch or the actual member size that fails (if it does).

Any thoughts on this? No doom sayers please.....I'm worried enough about it already.

Cheers,

Y

Re: Naylor Boat Lift

The weakest points I've heard/seen on lifts are usually the cables and the cross members mounting the bunks or bunks themselves. Remember, the ratings are when new, not after a number of years exposed to the weather and environment.

I don't want to be a "doom sayer", but you really are asking for trouble. I guess if need be - try keeping the weight as low as possible (fuel, people, gear, cooler of beer, etc.) while on the lift. I'm sure there's a safety factor in there as well. Good luck, and I'll keep my fingers crossed about not seeing your next post on here asking how to repair or dry out your boat that fell into the water!
