Head rest

Anybody know how to repair the headrest that's part of the sundeck. I lifted my deck up and the headrest came off in my hand?

Hi mikec, sorry to here about the headrest. Now, did the bolts fall off or are they stripped out or did something else happen? ( a tiny more detail please )

Thank for the the reply wet willy. The bolts are sticking out of the sun deck and the head rest has empty holes. I don't know if they just pulled out or if the nuts came off. I'm just not sure how it's supposed to work.

Re: Head rest

You probably had steel "T" nuts that have rusted off inside the headrest.
If you remove the staples on the back side of the headrest that hold the vinyl cover on, you can remove the cover and the foam insert. You should then find the remains of the "T" nuts surrounding the holes in the wood. Replace them with Stainless Steel ones if you can find any or regular steel ones if unable to locate the stainless ones. Any good hardware store should have the regular "T" nuts. You may have to replace the bolts too if the threads are screwed up.

Re: Head rest

A couple long drywall screws from the hatch into the wood in the headrest does the trick as well, unless you are using the headrest as a lifting point.

Re: Head rest

Another alternative is to use long drywall Toggle Bolts if you cant get into the headrest to replace the T-nuts.

Re: Head rest

Use bolts that are as short as possible if you use the toggle bolts. Or get a good first aid kit for the wounds in the back of the heads of your passengers.:eek_animated:

Re: Head rest

I had my entire sun deck redone last spring on my Z272. The person that did it for me rebuilt the entire frame out of high density polyethelene. It's a little heavier than the treated plywood that was used from the factory. The whole thing, including the the headrests are full of t-nuts. The plywood gets a liitle water logged or rotten, or they loosen up and pull right through! If you have good solid material to attach to then screws might be your best short term solution.

Redoing my sundeck right now. All the headrest in mine were held on with 4 stainless steel screws per headrest.

Hey Mike - did you get anywhere with this?

One of mines just done the same! Looks like 1 bolt and 1 dirty great self tapper...

Any tips for getting the vinyl back on neatly? Presumably a good staple gun is a good place to start..?

Re: Head rest

All 4 of my headrests came off. While they used stainless bolts, they used cheap steel t-nuts. I removed all headrests and carefully opened the upholstery on the bottom half of the headress to get access to the holes and installed new stainless t-nuts. I then cut slits into the inside of the sundeck to get to the screws so that I could reattach. I did have to replace many of the screws due to rusted t-nuts stuck to them.

I had the sundeck reupholstered last year. I had the design stiching left out and had a welded welting piece used rather than stiched welting. All of this to reduce the amount of water soaking into the sundeck cushion. Mine had about 50lbs of water in it when I took it appart.

Hey, The same thing happen to us, Ii used toggle bolts. I placed a washer at the inside face of the headrest tand. It works out real well.

Re: Head rest

Im approx 30 days away from complete removal of my headrests in my interior remodel portion of my boat project. I plan instead to replace the rear deck with denser/taller foam and do a more intricate design with the vinyl. Ive been looking as well as doing an integrated headrest design as well.
