Picked up my 'new' Mariah yesterday. It's a 1999 Z258 Shabah cuddy. 5.7 fuel injected and (I think) a Bravo 1 out drive. Hauled the boat and trailer down on a friend's gooseneck and had my buddy who owns a towing company pick the whole thing off. Got the new wheel bearings installed and took it to the lake today. Ran good for the most part, have some issues to work on still including an occasional stall at idle, tilt gauge, faulty depth gauge, and exhaust bellows. Any of you guys have thoughts on what the HP of this thing should be? And what prop it should have? It seemed to top out around 35 mph based on my gps and around 4k rpm. Think the prop on it is a 21.

I like the 258s. They look sporty and still have a decent amount of cuddy space. I'm sure someone who knows the exact RPM range will chime in but 4k is low for the 5.7 which I think is rated around 260hp. Then again, I may be off on that number.

Where did this boat come from and where is it running now? Elevation plays a big part in prop choice and available motor power.

As for bellows, may as well do the drive bellow, shift cable/bellow and possibly the trim senders (if that is what trouble shooting leads you to) while you have it apart. It'll make good peace of mind knowing everything is up to date.

4400-4800 rpm for WOT is what you need to aim at.
If your running 4000 now you need to at least drop to a 19P prop. 35 mph seems a bit slow for top end to me. With the 5.7 you should run in the 40-44 mph range according to the brochure , but that is in ideal conditions.
As Moto said , do all boots , check speedo line , trim senders , gimble bearing , U joints , etc. at that point when you replace the exhaust boot.

It was originally a Minnesota boat, from the growths on it I would guess it lived on the great lakes for awhile. Now it's in the Madison, WI area. I'm doing all the boots, along with the water and oil feed and both trim sensors. Gimble bearing looks beautiful and was agedly replaced before the boat was parked for a couple years. Almost got it all back together today but tore the gasket (rushing) before I had to go to work. It likely needs some fresh fuel but since it has over half a tank, I need to run it down a bit first. Thanks for the help guys! Love having something to work on and this thing shouldn't put me in the red too badly if I ever want to sell it.

I would suggest changing out the fuel/separator filter now , and then again in a tank or two.

If you haven't already , clean the hull.
That'll give you another 2-3 mph easy.
