I had this last year on my Merc outboard. Turned out to be a sensor (either temp or oil, can't remember which right now). While cranking, merc would ignore the input from it, so motor would start, once key turned back to run position, it would utilize signal from sensor and shut down the motor for protection.

Some of the stuff I read and trouble shooting I did before getting it figured out was to validate that the ignition switch was working correctly (from reading, this is the most common cause). Unplug main wiring harness and make sure there's no corrosion there and coat connections with di-electric grease before plugging back in. Started testing sensors... found the bad one and 6 bux later I was back in business.

I'm not sure if the i/o's have the same type of override while cranking or not.
