Newbie needs help w/ Z-272 !!!
Hello everybody!! I desperately need help with my new 2001 Z-272 Shabah 8.2L, all comments tremendously appreciated.
#1- Got Screwed by seller, leakdown test shows 80# compression in one cylinder and idles rough..high end boat shop advises either run til blows up or pull heads and see if a valve job will do (290 hours), or full rebuild if not. I saw Merc gets 14k new, or Daddy-O marine in Ft Lauderdale will send a longblock from GM Marine for 7195 w/o shipping. Rebuild option is just as expensive but includes several hrs of dyno time from a race boat building company with a great reputation. My headers were pressure tested and they came out fine. I don't mind spending an extra10K for a boat that commands such a devoted cult following..and I just WOWWW!!! all over when I rev the 500HP engine going under the bridge!! I understand a few people did comment that water can sometimes enter the engine if stopped quickly,,I am not sure if there are OEM flapper valves on this boat or if they are recommended by others if not. My mechanic suggested I consider this. #2: Seats are in poor condition. Any good advice on replacements for all of these seats?? Can I get some kind of a bolt on replacement for the electric adjustable seats? #3: Suggestions for dashboard replacements? :eek_animated: |
Re: Newbie needs help w/ Z-272 !!!
Wow! Well, welcome aboard. Sorry you got screwed like that. Here is what I can help with...
If you do not have straight thru hull exhaust, then Yes, you should have exhaust flappers that are located aft of your risers. If you have captains call exhaust, you should be able to remove the exhaust elbow and see them. They are important to keep water from back flowing into the engine. Your thru hull tips should also have flappers as well. Not sure of a bolt on placement for the seats. I was going to remove mine from the boat and take them in somewhere to have redone. Do the electric seats still work? Mine are still hanging on, but the vinyl needs redone. As far as dashboard replacement, good luck finding a complete replacement. I did the redneck fix on mine and it came out great. All I did was replace the switch actuators and literally used texture spray paint on the plastic. Sounds stupid but I don't have $1,000 to have a custom fiberglass piece made and have it dunk tanked with wood grain. So I am happy! :) Here is the link to that thread... http://www.mariahownersclub.com/foru...ead.php?t=6611 Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD |
Re: Newbie needs help w/ Z-272 !!!
I am not sure of your mechanical abilities or tools/equipment at your disposal but 10k would be a lot to put into that 502. I would think having the motor pulled an rebuilt would not cost a 3rd of that. I'm sure there are some good shops down in your area too.
As for the upholstery you'd have to call around or go meet with some people an get some solid prices. I had some stuff done at an auto upholstery place. They ordered in some marine vinyl an it came out great. Keeps us updated on the situation. Curious how the motor goes for you. I have right around 320 hrs on my 454. Re: Newbie needs help w/ Z-272 !!!
Thanks for the note! Yes, I have the captains call exhaust ($$$) and I will mention to my mechanic to look for the in line flapper. I don't see the flappers on the thru hull exhaust tips (4-5" chrome, right??)
My electric seats work fine, but they do need a recover..I was thinking of getting an aftermarket seat to replace them if estimates for recover are too high, suggestions anybody? Rear power lift seat over engine bay works fine. Yes, I thought a GM marine longblock for 7200 was pretty damn good (Daddy-O in Ft Lauderdale), but my mechanic swears by his performance shop in Bradenton, with lots of dyno time thrown in. Rebuild for an 8.2L is WAYY more expensive than a 4.3 or 5.7 since you have everything from a roller cam to special 90mm high dome pistons, special rods, etc. ..I've seen lots of 5.7 rebuilds for 3500 for example. And my stock 8.2 is rated at 470 ponies.. Luckily, I have a bit more $ than boatbrains, and I really want this project to come out right since I intend to spend a lot of time on the water..just not like the guy across the street from me who has a 41' Donzi with TWO 525 Merc HP motors..does at least 90+...went on the Poker Run last week and blew 5k on damage to a prop and skeg..too rich for my blood. I look forward to letting everybody know how things turn out. Oh, yeah..I'm told that with still water and a factory fresh engine I should pull 60+mph, anybody know orig factory top end?? |
Re: Newbie needs help w/ Z-272 !!!
Thanks Oregon. I assume you have the rear thru hull chrome tip exhaust on your 302?? Do you have flappers on them?

no thru hull, only thru prop |
Re: Newbie needs help w/ Z-272 !!!
I have the stock captains call and the flappers for my thru hull are not on the outside like some, they are on the inside of the exhaust tube. Probably about 12" in from the outside.

Re: Newbie needs help w/ Z-272 !!!
Thanks Chris, I owe you for that!! I'll let my mechanic know. I am curious why SOME Cap'n call exhausts would have outside flappers, but not others..? Aftermarket add on's?? If anybody else could comment in that regard I'd appreciate! I'll have my guy look for any old mounting holes on the tips, but I don't remember any.
PS, what is top end on you 275, and what HP rating?? |
Re: Newbie needs help w/ Z-272 !!!
No problem at all dude. I have a 6.2L in mine which I believe is 320hp. I typically can squeak 49mph with 4-5 people in flat seas and trimmed absolutely perfect. :) I have shown 50 on GPS before, but lets be conservative and say 48-49.

Re: Newbie needs help w/ Z-272 !!!
We have a 275 with captains call and the 502mag with 415hp. Wife and I can get 60mph on the lake when the water is like glass and trimmed out.

Re: Newbie needs help w/ Z-272 !!!
Oh man...the 502..how sweet! I soooo wanted to upgrade to that engine, but it will have to wait. It is on my wish list though! By the way, are your thru hull exhaust flappers on the inside like mine are?

Re: Newbie needs help w/ Z-272 !!!
My thru hull is on the outside corners above the swim deck. The flappers are inside a little bit.

Re: Newbie needs help w/ Z-272 !!!
Hey dubldoc, just to put this out there because it has caused some confusion recently: There are major differences between 454/502 and the 454/502 MAGs. I'm not saying you don't have the 502 MAG, just giving a heads up if you are looking into parts and stuff they do not interchange... Not that I personally found that out or anything

I saw my mechanic today (amidst a sea of million $ carbon fiber race boats) and he showed me pooling type rust on the inside of my headers...said that b/c my headers looked so darn good they must have been aftermarket add on's from last few years..and that they have a somewhat cramped design prone to water intrusion through backflow. He suggested waiting til we hear from the machine shop whether we can get by with a valve job, or if we do the whole motor and 'lose' the aft portion of the headers (separate section with the servo flange that diverts to the water) and make a new aft portion exhaust. Oh well. Boating. >sigh< Anybody else with Captains call headers like to comment?? |
Re: Newbie needs help w/ Z-272 !!!
That piece with the built in diverter is expensive! The original owner of my boat had the same issue as you...the diverter rusted out due to them not replacing the flappers so they put an elbow in its place. I contacted Corsa and they said it would cost me $1,400 for both diverters. So that is at the bottom of my list for now. :(

Re: Newbie needs help w/ Z-272 !!!
As far as the speed, I am not sure. But Michael above stated that he has the same boat as me and is hitting 60 with 415hp. So, yea, I guess you would be right. Either way, it would be fast as $&@$!

Re: Newbie needs help w/ Z-272 !!!
Yes, there can be some confusion with motor options. The vortec 8.1 can get up to 390, a few tweaks will get it to 425 HP.
My 8.2 was one of the first 'Blue' motors by Mercury for offshore racing..basically a Stage 1..and next step up was the 525HP, followed by the full out dry sump supercharged version, about 680 HP if memory serves. I was surprised by the large number of motor options, I suppose if I wanted a family boat the best of all worlds would be the 377 ci. Top end dream for me is 70, I might look into a few tweaks. Since my guy is pushing a possible switch from current in line diverter, I may be posting here to sell them..they look pretty darn clean. I look forward to keeping everybody posted on how things turn out, thanks everybody! |
Re: Newbie needs help w/ Z-272 !!!
