We have a 275 with captains call and the 502mag with 415hp. Wife and I can get 60mph on the lake when the water is like glass and trimmed out.

Oh man...the 502..how sweet! I soooo wanted to upgrade to that engine, but it will have to wait. It is on my wish list though! By the way, are your thru hull exhaust flappers on the inside like mine are?

My thru hull is on the outside corners above the swim deck. The flappers are inside a little bit.

Hey dubldoc, just to put this out there because it has caused some confusion recently: There are major differences between 454/502 and the 454/502 MAGs. I'm not saying you don't have the 502 MAG, just giving a heads up if you are looking into parts and stuff they do not interchange... Not that I personally found that out or anything

So, with 470 HP in essentially the same boat, with a fresh motor that will have been dyno'd, I should expect low 60's??

I saw my mechanic today (amidst a sea of million $ carbon fiber race boats) and he showed me pooling type rust on the inside of my headers...said that b/c my headers looked so darn good they must have been aftermarket add on's from last few years..and that they have a somewhat cramped design prone to water intrusion through backflow. He suggested waiting til we hear from the machine shop whether we can get by with a valve job, or if we do the whole motor and 'lose' the aft portion of the headers
(separate section with the servo flange that diverts to the water) and make a new aft portion exhaust. Oh well. Boating. >sigh<

Anybody else with Captains call headers like to comment??

That piece with the built in diverter is expensive! The original owner of my boat had the same issue as you...the diverter rusted out due to them not replacing the flappers so they put an elbow in its place. I contacted Corsa and they said it would cost me $1,400 for both diverters. So that is at the bottom of my list for now.

As far as the speed, I am not sure. But Michael above stated that he has the same boat as me and is hitting 60 with 415hp. So, yea, I guess you would be right. Either way, it would be fast as $&@$!

Yes, there can be some confusion with motor options. The vortec 8.1 can get up to 390, a few tweaks will get it to 425 HP.
My 8.2 was one of the first 'Blue' motors by Mercury for offshore racing..basically a Stage 1..and next step up was the 525HP, followed by the full out dry sump supercharged version, about 680 HP if memory serves.
I was surprised by the large number of motor options, I suppose if I wanted a family boat the best of all worlds would be the 377 ci.
Top end dream for me is 70, I might look into a few tweaks.
Since my guy is pushing a possible switch from current in line diverter, I may be posting here to sell them..they look pretty darn clean. I look forward to keeping everybody posted on how things turn out, thanks everybody!
