Hello guys and gals, I'm new to the boating world. I'm looking at a 93 198 shabah, test drove it at the boat dealer that has it. The interior is in dang good shape, all original, the outside has the usual scuffs, the engine wouldn't rev past half throttle. They rebuilt the carb and said it is running great now. I asked for the compression numbers and I dont know what I should do.
#1-148,#2-132.8,#3-138.6,#4-137.2,#5-126.3,#6-125.4. They wanted $5995 for the boat, I got them to 5200, 5900 out the door. Should I be worried about the compression numbers? Thanks in advance. Oh, it's a 4.3 mercruiser. Thanks

You are looking at a 'Mariah MX 198 Shabah' if its a 1993 model. Your numbers are within spec (lowest should be within 70% of highest) so i dont think you have a compression issue. The engine may be a bit tired though. I think you should do a leak-down test on that engine to be sure. Its also possible that they messed up slightly when they rebuilt the carb (wrong gasket, improper fuel metering rod setup, idle tubes not perfectly cleaned etc). I would also want to test the boat on the water.

Boy that made me feel better, we did test the boat in the water. The engine was quiet and was smooth, just bogged down around half throttle. Now they have rebuilt the carb and said it was running very well. We are going back up there in the morning to try it out again.

The accelerator pump is a common cause of that type of issue. Rebuilding the carb should resolve it.
