Its probably the connection at the sender unit. Take the connections apart, clean thoroughly and re-attach. Also check that the connection is secure on the back of the gauge itself. IF that does not work, then it could be a failed sender unit. Access is generally right in front of the motor underneath a small 'flap' in the carpet.
And just as a reminder, do not use power tools if you are replacing the sender unit. Potential sparks and gasoline fumes dont mix well.....
