Welcome to the club Dave! Yamaha 305 is a V8 correct? Do you know what is the hp and prop you are running? Post some pictures when you get a chance.

I've never worked on a Yamaha outdrive but I assume they are a pretty close copy to either a Mercruiser or Volvo Penta drive. Tilt the drive all the way up. Remove the lower drain screw located on the starboard side of the drive at the bottom of the bullet then remove the upper vent screw usually located on the right side at the top of the drive. Let the oil drain completely. To refill with drive lube, purchase a quart bottle oil pump available at any marine store. Install the pump in the lower fill screw hole. Tilt the drive so it is fully down. Pump the recommended fluid until it just starts to come out of the upper vent screw hole. Install the upper vent screw with a new gasket then remove the pump and install the lower drain screw with a new gasket.
