Default Hull id number

HI,
Recently purchased a SC21 Cuddy Cabin at auction. No title. When I went to register the boat I found that the Hull id on the rear of the boat was illegible. Is the h.i.n. any place else on the boat. How else can I get info on this boat?
Thanks.

Sounds like it may have been stolen at one point. I assume the boat was registered at some time and a number is still visible?
Is there a Coast Guard plate on the boat that might show the hull ID#?

You can always try contacting Sea-Fox and see if they can tell you if there is more than one location where the hull ID was entered.

Thanks , stolen was my first thought too. State reg is for MD but only 4 numbers are legible after MD. I called the Coast Guard and Md state police, nothing on record for either. One member stated that boats mfg after 1984 have a duplicate hin affixed somewhere on an unexposed location inside the boat or beneath a fitting or item of hardware. That's my next step. Motor (4.3L i/o) was made in 2004 so I'm assuming the boat is from around that year.

    Thanks,
We recently had a traumatic death in the family so I had to defer doing anything with my boat project for a while. When I signed back on I could not find either my post or the reply so I posted again to try to get the info.
Do you know anything about the whereabouts of the hidden HIN? I have emailed the mfg but have not had a response.
    Thanks.

WHAT, AND WHERE IS THE HIN ON A MOTORBOAT?
The HIN is the Hull Identification Number assigned to the boat. Each HIN is unique to that boat, and is the same
as the VIN on a motor vehicle.
All boats manufactured after 1972 have a HIN consisting of 12 characters as required by the Federal Boat Safety
Act of 1972. The 12 characters are continuous and uninterrupted by slashes, hyphens, or spaces. The first three
characters are letters that form a code for the manufacturer (e.g. KAW is the beginning of a Kawasaki HIN.
Other manufacturers have other letters, but all HINs begin with three letters). After the first three letters, the rest
of the digits will usually be numbers.
The HIN will be at least 1/4 inch high and permanently affixed to the boat. Its removal would cause permanent
scarring. It is part of the hull, and it is not on any item that is removable. It is not on the engine (although
engines do have similar serial numbers.)
There are two identical HINs on the boat, a primary and a secondary.

THE PRIMARY HIN SHOULD BE AFFIXED TO:
    • Transom - On boats with transoms (flat backs), to the starboard outboard
side within two inches of the top of the transom, gunwale, or hull/deck
    joint, whichever is lowest.
    • Without Transoms - On boats without transoms or boats on which it
would be impractical to use the transom, to the starboard outboard side,
aft, within one foot of the stern and within two inches of the top of the hull
side, gunwale or hull/deck joint, whichever is lowest.
    • Catamaran - On catamarans and pontoon boats that have readily
replaceable hulls, to the aft crossbeam within one foot of the starboard hull
    attachment.
    • Other Locations - If rails or other accessories would obscure a HIN, it
should be affixed as near as possible to the starboard outboard side within
two inches of the top of the transom, gunwale or hull/deck joint,
    whichever is lowest.

THE SECONDARY HIN SHOULD BE AFFIXED TO an unexposed location on the
interior of the boat or beneath a fitting or item of hardware. If the primary HIN is
missing, the owner should call the manufacturer to try to find the secondary HIN. The
Coast Guard wants the original HIN used if possible.

Probably all info you already had but I thought it may help.

You'd be better off calling Sea Fox via phone and asking. Email doesn't seem to be the best method of contact for them.

    (843) 761-6090

On the old Mariahs, the production number was written on many parts, including the backs of the interior panels, and sometimes on the tags on the original canvas tops. However, I don't believe Sea Fox may have done this, but it's worth a call to find out...

Yes...we're aware of the rules governing Hull ID's.
