Speedometer not working

Anyone have tips on troubleshooting a speedometer?? 1996 Shabah 180.
The lake patrol pulled me over claiming i was exceeding the speed limit. He took pity on my when i told him my recently purchased boat has an odometer that only registers speed when going over 30 or so.
I would appreciate any pointers or recommendations. Thanks
Matt

This is a really common question here. Have a look thru this thread and it should resolve your speedo problem.

Hi,

I have a '98 Shabah 180 and the speedo is not working. I checked the tubing and found that it was pinched off near the transom. The problem I have and for which I would really appreciate some advice is that I can't seem to find the mating part of the tube where it goes through the transom. Can someone describe to me where exactly the speedo tubing goes through the tansom? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

whats your lakes speed limit?
Even when pitot driven speedo's are working properly they aren't much good under 10mph.
If speed is an issue where you boat then maybe you should think about fitting some sort of gps.

Re: Speedometer not working

Hi again,

My speedometer tubing is intact at the connector on top of the anti cavitation plate. From there it runs back toward the transom for about 8", where it is pinched off. When I look closely I can see the other end of the tube where I presume it connects to some kind of connector before going through the transom and into the engine compartment, and back to the speedo.

The problem I'm having is that I can't seem to get at the connector at the transom so that I can replace the broken tube. So the issue is right at the transom. My apologies if I'm not explaining this correctly. Thanks.

I'm assuming that you've looked at the photos provided by WetWilly in the other thread i linked to earlier? I'm not aware of any other connection other than the plastic one on the outdrive. I know its difficult to get at but it can be done. Did you try blowing air (with a compressor!) backwards thru your speedo tube yet?
