Auxilary Trailering/Trim Switch
 

For the last 4 years here in Colorado the Department Of Wildlife and the BLM have required all boats being launched in any state or federal lake be checked for Zebra Mussels.
I don't mind the requirement at all , it just sucks to have to lower the drive going both in and out of the water at the check station.
Soooooo , I came up with adding another trim/trailer switch at the back of my Diablo where it is readily accessible without climbing in the boat(I'm only 5'-8") everytime.
Has anyone done this before on the forum? If so any pointers to wire it in and how about where to mount the switch. I was thinking close to the fuel filler.
What do you guys think?

You definately won't regret having the trailering/trim switch added. I have put them on several boats now and it makes it so much easier. Don't know if it matters, but I would probably put the switch on the other side of the stern light, opposite from the fuel fill. That way, it's closer when you get out of your vehicle to walk around the back to lower the stern drive at your launch. As far as wiring, I've always had the switches installed by my marine service guy. He never charged much, so it must have been pretty easy to do. Good luck with the switch!

Hey dey ,
I thought about on the port side , but my grandson(6) , and others use the boarding ladder on occasion. Figured it would be a little more out of the way towards the starboard side.
Any input on wiring or a better location? Do I need a relay of anysort between the switch and the motor , or can I wire direct to motor?

hi Larry,

You may already have the wiring in place for the transom mounted trailer switch. If u look at my power trim/tilt diagnostics sticky you should see a purple/white & a red/purple wire with connectors hanging from your loom up behind the engine. I'm not certain though that all of our boats had the wiring in place. No relay is required as far as i know.

As for positioning of the switch, i would likely install just to the starboard side of the fuel filler depending on how easy it is to access that area.

Hey Larry,

I'm picking up my boat from the shop later this afternoon. Had to fix the leak of drive fluid into the bilge, have to replace yolk and upper seal. Anyway, I'll check the wiring when I get it back. I agree with Mikey, that you won't need a relay.

I think that having one at the stern will help me out a bunch. Especially at the end of the day when I'm draggin a** :)

I mounted mine behind the grab rail to prevent it getting kicked/stepped no with all the traffic across the back of mine. I also mounted one in my anchor bay so that I could put it into trailer position from the hitch of the trailer when I am loading at the dock. I did not use the provided wiring harness but rather wired the two in series and and attached directly to the solenoids at the pump.

but it is already wired as mikey thought. I bet yours is too.
I blew the original motor that was in her when I bought her. So......the trim switch went on hold while I am building up my new motor.

like you i'm not the tallest of chaps, and if you've seen the pic's of my boat on it's trailer jumping in and out all the time will soon get boring at the ramp/slipway.
