Fuel leaking when stored

I was at the place where I store my boat and the fellow said he found gas comming out the vent,so he drained a couple gallons of gas. but later he had to drain a little more. I lowered the trailer down in the front. This is the first time in all the years of storing boats this happened has any one have this happen?? This is a insulated, cement floor building with other boats in it Gary G

Out the vent up near the cap? Did you fill it up right before storage? If so, could just be the temperature swings causing the gas to expand. That would cause it to come out the vent. Check the bilge as well just to be sure it's not a hose or fitting.

Maybe the guy was just short on $ that day and needed a couple gallons in his car?

Ryan My friend didn't need the gas.but was concerted about the all boats, trailers stored in his building.I checked the bildge and no leaks. I try to store my boat with a pretty full tank, you get less condensation in the tank. What is a good rubbing compound and wax to use, because the gas removed the wax? Next year I won't fill the tank so full when I store it. Thanks for your reply Gary G:)

Re: Fuel leaking when stored

I was told a couple of years ago by my mechanic it was best to leave very little gas in the tank over the winter and avoid the bad gas problems in the spring. With a plastic material tank, rust is no concern and it is easy to deal with the condensation problem. It has worked for me ever since.
