Are ya sure you're turning them the right way?

I've seen some mechanics take a long heavy duty screwdriver and hammer it right thru the oil filter and use the screwdriver to remove the oil filter. Kinda messy though.....

Are you using a filter wrench, or just your hands? Try some penetrating oil around the gasket, then a pipe to extend the wrench handle and give some leverage. Be careful on the fuel filter - make sure you don't break the mount.

It sounds like the installer didn't wet the gasket when they installed the filter. Usually the problem is that the gasket is stuck to the filter mount. Put on some pressure with the filter wrench, then tap around the top of the filter with a hammer (lightly!).

I've successfully used the screwdriver through the filter method. I've also used a heavy duty filter wrench with a chain around the filter. With enough pressure you will completely collapse the filter, but it will eventually come off. Again, some tapping with pressure will usually help it break free.

If all of that fails, the worst one I ever took off... the filter body completely collapsed and broke free from the threaded part of the filter. I scraped the crusty oring from the filter mount, then using a small pipe wrench, I took the threaded part of the filter off the mount.

Like someone else said... messy, but it works.
