U Joint Clicking When Turning

Well being new to boats I have not run across this issue. When I start up in the morning everything sounds find and I can do hard turns forward and reverse with no issues. After about an hour I can hear a clicking sound that appears to be coming from the u joint during hard turns. The noise goes away when I straiten out, thus I thought it must be the u joint. I am not sure when the last time the u joint was serviced and did not know if it could just need to be greased? I would think if it was going out it would do it all the time? I have had it out 3 trips with the exact same result. Thoughts, opinions, or help is very welcomed.

Thanks

It could be the u joints needing grease or to be replaced. When was the last time you greased the coupler/splines. Everyone forgets that there are zerk fittings on the back of the coupler. It could also be the gimbal bearing that needs grease or replacing. I would start by greasing what you can.

Thanks Steve. I ordered both kinds of grease (u joint and 2-4-C). I will pull it out of the slip when they come in and grease it up.

Re: U Joint Clicking When Turning

Well, before I could grease anything the wheel started vibrating when I would turn it left or right and making a rapid clicking sound. Not having anywhere to work on my boat's outdrive I took it to a mechanic. I just received work that the u-joint and bearing are find and everything look good on the unit. His next place to go is steering. Just wanted to see if anyone else has run across this issue.
