What are these for? 2 on either side of the motor, fits a 1/2" drive socket. Seems the threads are backed out a bit.

Yes, they're underneath the riser, 2 on each one.

They are pipe plugs that close off the water jacket of the exhaust manifold/riser. It's OK that you can see exposed threads on the pipe plug...as long as the plug isn't leaking water :D

No, there are usually smaller square or hex shaped plugs on the underside of the manifold that are the lowest point which are used to drain the manifold.

Steve, if i could ask you for your opinion does this look right? Risers and manifolds drains and disconnect 2 hoses, ( make sure engine is level) and that will remove the water that could potentially freeze and crack the block?
Im not a fan of adding antifreeze thru muffs. If i must, id drain the block and add it after.

Sorry I missed your question. You are probably done winterizing but thought I would answer anyhow. I've used both methods successfully.
Method 1: drain the block and manifolds, open thermostat housing and pour in anti-freeze after. Also you need to make sure you get all the water out of the raw water pump, fuel pump cooler, oil cooler, PS cooler etc.
Method 2 (preferred): run engine on hose until thermostat opens, using a a Y valve switch from hose to a 5 gal bucket filled with RV anti-freeze. I shut off motor when the bucket is empty and then I go back and drain the motor and exhaust manifolds. Using this method I don't have to mess with the various coolers, the raw water pump and don't have to worry about what is trapped in the block and manifolds as they are anti-freeze.

Thanks steve! I appreciate the input, ive fought to gather " the right" way to winterize a marine engine.
So far i have drained the block, mani's disconnected hoses and blew out all of them with a shop vac. Hooked up one at a time and blew out some more feeling for the air coming out of the block, manifolds, hose ends etc. The hoses are all connected to the components of the motor that require water cooling.

I like the idea of adding antifreeze after the water drain, that way you know for sure the antifreeze isn't diluted.

Can you do the first way you mentioned, empty block, mani's etc etc, then add through the thermostat housing, then not start, but turn the motor over a few times to cycle the raw antifreeze through it?

Im worried i may have left some residual water but ive heard, a little bit wont hurt anything as it has room to expand after you drain and blow lines.
