electric trouble
 

i am working onmy boat attatching the battery cables. There are the two large ones to start the engine and two smaller ones. Attaching the cables one way, the power trim does not work, but all the electica gauges work. Swapping them, the trim works and the gauges do not.

also the horn that sounds when you start the boat will not quit, so it cut it out. will this affect anything.

Do you have 2 batteries or just one?

Guessing where wires go is a good way to destroy things--and even start fires. If you don't know how to figure out how to connect the cables to your battery, find someone to show you.

The wires should be colour-coded. Red goes on POSitive (+), black on NEGative (-). Other ways to tell: The large red wire will go straight to the starter solenoid, the large black wire straight to a ground point on the engine block, and the smaller red wire should have an in-line fuse holder.

If things don't seem to match the above, as I said: Find somebody who knows something about these things to figure it out and show you.

Once you get the battery hooked up properly, then start trouble-shooting why what doesn't work doesn't work.

I believe you mean the alarm "buzzer." Yeah: It will affect your knowing when your engine or outdrive are in distress, perhaps resulting in very expensive repairs.

When you say "won't quit," do you mean after you've started the engine, or if you turn on the key without starting the engine? If the former: You either have a problem with your engine or drive system or a bad sensor. If the latter: That's normal. It happens because one of the things alarmed is oil pressure. No oil pressure is regarded as a Very Bad Thing, so the alarm sounds.

That alarm is on low oil pressure, engine over-temperature, and low drive fluid. If the alarm is sounding after the engine's running, you need to find out which it is and whether a bad condition exists or the sensor is lying.

DO NOT leave that alarm disconnected. Many's the user here who's engine's been saved by that alarm when something suddenly went amiss.
