Hard to start when cold

We have a 2000 jubilee z244 with a 5.7, we are new to boating and the guy I bought it from said when starting it cold to push in on black button (where the throttle pivots) go half throttle then back to neutral and that sets the choke but when we do this it doesn't start very good then I have to climb up in boat and try to get it started ( I do the backing, while wife takes care of boat since she can't back a trailer) mean while everyone is waiting on us at ramp to get out of their way, once it starts no problem after that, any suggestions?

I tend to pump mine once or twice then set the throttle back to about 1/4 (just before neutral) when doing a cold start and that seems to work with mine. It may just take a little experimenting to get the sweet spot.

Does it matter if key is in off position while doing the throttle?

Push that button in, give it two quick pumps and set it at the 1/4 throttle lock that button gives you. That's a fast idle. Turn the key. Should start no problem.

Re: Hard to start when cold

We took the boat out on the Ohio river yesterday and we tried that and that seem to be the ticket, fired right up, I appreciate your comments helped me out...we went down river about a 3hr drive 1 way, ate catfish at a floating restaurant then went down about a 1\2hr to a marina to get fuel and drove back, we had to go thru a lock and dam twice during our trip (first time for that experience lol) which was cool, the river was very choppy yesterday but all in all it was a great time...it was something to see all the barges traveling up and down the river not to mention the wake they throw out even about a 1\2 mile behind them
