LOUD Tapping Noise
 

I have a 1995 Mercruiser 5.7, Bravo One. Motor is fine, but there's a loud tapping noise in the top of the outdrive when gear is engaged. Only makes the sound when outdrive is raised and prop turning. Lower the drive and the noise stops.

Any ideas?

Sounds like the u-joints dont like to be run when the outdrive is in the up position and in gear. They are not designed to do that. Please stop unless you really want some damage to pay for. :shakehead:

I'd bet on U joints as well.
Might want to check your trim limits if the normal operating range is making that noise. It could be possible it is not adjusted correctly. Then again, one shouldn't be operating the drive if it is trimmed up super high.
Another idea may be gimbal bearing. Just something to consider.
