Hard to start
I have a 2001 Diablo with a 4.3 liter Mercury engine. I've routinely had issues getting the boat to start since purchasing it earlier this summer. I had a full mechanical check that found nothing wrong and replaced the battery upon purchase.
The engine has trouble turning over. I have to put the boat into neutral with the throttle wide open and then turn the key a few times in order to get it started. Some days I worry it won't start at all and I rarely turn the boat off once on the lake because I fear being unable to start while out. Any times on things I can do to resolve this? I feel like I should be able to just turn the key and have it start, having to go into neutral and try several times feels like overkill. |
Re: Hard to start
Mine had a similar problem, ended up just pulling the carb and rebuilding it. Put it back on and did the adjustments, what do you know it worked. Now i'm not telling you that's your problem, just giving you an idea. You could become a contributing member and all the books that you will need are at your finger tips.

Re: Hard to start
Sounds like possible choke issue to me. Is carbed or EFI?

Maybe it is just in need of a long overdue tune up. Planning to do that at the end of the boating season (or start of the next) anyways. |
Re: Hard to start
Dang , I'd take it to a merc tech so he can check it on the scan tool.
Sorry , I'm not up too much with the EFI setups. One of our other members with EFI experience will chime in I'm sure :) Let us know what you find out either way. Larry |
Re: Hard to start
Sorry my suggestion won't work. Hope you get it figured out.

Re: Hard to start
I would start with checking the fuel pump pressure and perhaps the coolant temp sensor.
