Default six-pack license?

That was a dumb question, huh. What kind of boater doesn't have a six-pack or even a 12 pack on board,................... for guests.

Anyone have their six-pack (OUPV) license? masters? and are you using it?

I recently upgraded to a Masters 50T. Maybe someday I can retire and put it to use somewhere warm.

Care to explain what you are talking about Steve

We just started doing the boating licenses here in Washington. I've had mine for several years even though i didn't have to get it for a couple more years.

    Ryan,
The USCG issues licenses to operate a boat commercially, taking paying passengers.
A six-pack is a term used to describe the OUPV license, Operator of an Uninspected Passenger Vessel. OUPV license allows a vessel operator to take up to SIX paying passengers in his vessel, hence the six-pack name. It is one of the entry level licenses. These are often the fishing charter boatswater taxis etc.. Licenses are issued for Inland only, Near Coastal or Ocean ratings. Upgrades allow additional passengers and larger displacement vessels.
The licensee has to provide sea time verification, physical ability, cpr and first aid cert and pass a USCG exam.
Some of the License holders use them to transport owners boats from one location to another. The license is an indication of training and experience.

Here in NY, PWC operators or young boaters have to take a safety course. I beleive that sooner or later, all boaters will have to to provide some evidence of training and/or testing much like a motorcycle license.

My license is limited to inland waters only. I dont have enough sea time beyond the inland boundries to qualify for a near coastal license. Someday, it would be nice to relocate to a warmer location where I can fiddle about in boats every day if I like.

Thanks for that info Steve. I'm with you, i would love to someday be in a position where i need a near coastal license or something even higher because that would mean i spend all my time around boats and the water!

I think its great that more states are passing mandatory boater education laws. With the amount of deaths that occur each year with PWC's alone, its just ridiculous the lack of knowledge you can have and still be allowed to operate what becomes a personal missile. I just hope that the water cops crack down and really patrol and make sure people have these licenses.

I used to take our jet skis down to Lake Washington in the spring, after school, and spend a couple hours out on the lake. It's gotten to the point that i've almost been killed several times because of the crazies out there. Numerous times i've come back in and put the jet skis back on the trailer because i don't feel safe on that lake. Stupid, stupid people.

I personally took an online safety course when my dad first purchased our Mariah, when i was 14 or so. I passed the final test and got my cert. card and then spent time on the water with him and the boat to prove to him i could apply what i learned. Shortly after he let me take the boat out by myself and with friends because he knew i had the knowledge to operate it safely. This past year i got a letter from WA state letting me know they were phasing in a boaters education requirement and that since i had taken an approved course already, i just had to pay the admin fee and got my WA state card as well.

    Ryan,
I expect that some type of license and boating education will eventually be required for every boat operator. Currently, you can write a check, buy a boat and your on the water. Some knowledge of the rules of the road and safety issues would surely help. There are some pretty fast boats on the water and I have yet to see one with brakes on 'em.

I don't have a PWC, but enjoy riding any I can borrow. It seems the throttles on these things have only two positions, either on or off. I can't help myself, I love the acceleration and speed. Much like a bike.

If you are considering a USCG license, ck their website. There are plenty of schools around the country that offer specific instruction for this. Obviously most will be located at the coasts. Many offer instruction in inland locations. Hey , maybe you need a vacation to Ft. Lauderdale or the Keys for a few weeks to take a 7 day course. That would be tough to take, huh.

Unfortunately a licensing system doesn't fix those kinds of idiots.

Here in Canada everyone will need an operators card by fall of 2009. Those that can currently get away without one are "old guys" with boats over 6 meters in length.

The card only validates that you've obtained 75% on the competency test (safety, navigatation and the like), and you are then permitted to operate a pleasure craft.

Having paying passengers is a whole different story. Your boat is no longer a "pleasure craft" and your safety requirements and registration details become much more stringent.

    Easy Straad,
Try to relax, breathe into the bag.
Who hasnt been run over once or twice!
I can tell your itchin' to get back on the water. You need to feel the wind in your face, and see the bow spray in the air, you need A BOATING FIX!
Me too, I wonder what airfare is to Australia, I hear the boating there is fine.
