Default Doh!

I was briefly awoken at 06:30 this morning by one of the cats making a small racket. I don't know why it would've finally clicked for me at that particular time, but it all-of-a-sudden occurred to me that the boat cover we ordered for the boat we're getting almost certainly won't work for our intended purpose. We ordered a Westland Custom Sharkskin Trailerable. It never occurred to me that such a cover would, you know, cover the cleats? And I suspect, from the girl's description of the material as not being breathable, that this isn't the kind of stuff you can cut and sew. So... I guess we're going to have a nice winter cover--which is not what we needed.

It was the "trailerable" description that threw me off. Ok, so it's trailerable. I can use it on a trailer, but I can also use it in other roles, too, right?

Yeah, just not, you know... moored.

*sigh*

To add insult-to-injury: It'll be the wrong colour. I insisted the boat was teal. The Admiral insisted she was blue. "Teal!" "Blue!" "It's teal!" "You're colour blind!" We have pictures and the original Craig's List listing. "Hmmm... She does look blue, honey, I guess you were right." Ordered royal blue cover. Stopped by the boat yesterday to take inventory of what else we'd need for her. (Flares, Type IV throwable, etc.)

Pictures lie: She's teal.

*sigh*

Ahh Jim, it happens to the best of us. We always end up giving in to the women, even when we know we're right.

If nothing else, you've got a winter storage cover. If you don't need it, put it up on ebay, or offer it for sale here on the board. Someone has to have a use for it. Maybe you'll be able to recoup your expenses so you can buy what you need. But if you're looking for a mooring cover, it might be best to have one made. The universal and semi-custom fit covers are nice for a utility cover, but nothing i'd consider using long term. I have one I use for winter storage only.

Or you could always make your own mooring cover, like the jackass in the photo below did. Made from the finest grade plastic tarp, and two 12 ft long 2x4's. You should have heard how quiet it was flapping around in the breeze. I don't think anyone in a 500ft radius could have slept. We had a small storm later that night, it sure didn't hold up so well. The next day it was gone.

Actually, it was she who brought it to my attention . And I do get to rib her about it. In fact: We've had this long-running, good-natured battle about which of us has better colour sense (i.e.: what colour things are) for years. On the way home, yesterday, something colour-related came up and she said "Perhaps I shouldn't argue with you about colour anymore" .

    (Yeah, like that's gonna happen.)

It's no big deal. The royal blue will probably not show the dirt as badly as a teal cover would, anyway.

And as for using it as a mooring cover: People at another nearby slip simply cut slits in their cover where the cleats were and reinforced them so they wouldn't keep tearing/splitting. Seems to work fine.

Now if we only actually end up with the boat.
