Default fuel pump help pls

need some help troubleshooting my fuel pump dilemah. i replaced my fuel pump and in less than a week the new one is shot. could it be a short or just dumb luck with a bad fuel pump?

we ran the boat monday after i installed the new fuel pump on sunday, put her in the garage and tried to take her out today (firday), she never even tried to fire... just wondering if anyone had ran into a similar situation with some faulty wiring or fuse maybe?

Hi fl_bill, typically, the electric fuel pumps are wired through an Oil Pressure Switch to shut down the pump in the event of oil pressure loss in the motor. You might want to insure the switch is working properly.

Thanks for the reply, after reading through some other questions I have already bypassed the pressure switch temporarily to eliminate it as a problem (sorry I should have mentioned that already)

Well After a little time to digest my faulty pump of less than a week old, i'm wondering could conatminated fuel kill a fuel pump that quickly? when i replaced the first fuel pump i also replaced the water/fuel seperator and it was chuck full of trash and when i poured it into a bowl it was probably greater than a 50% seperation.

After this new pump failed i pulled the new filter off and saw trash that apears to be varnish and again alot of fuel seperation, now i dont know if thats normal to have so much seperation but could this be why the new pump has froze?

What makes me believe it could be contaminated fuel is becasue the prevoius owner used a marina with a dry rack and fueled up at the marina, after our first 2 outings i filled with just regular shell fuel and didnt use any stabilizer. could it be breaking down the crap in the fuel tank?

I would just like to figure this out before i invest in another fuel pump, they arnt cheap enough to be throw aways lol. any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated!

    Thanks
    Bill

I had the same issue last year, mine ended up being the anti-siphon valve that is attached to the pick up tube at the gas tank. It screws into the pick up tube and the rubber gas line attaches to it below your fuel pump. At least that is how it is on my boat, 1993 model.

thanks for the reply, i was worried about that too when i first found the trash in the seperator and replaced it when I installed the new fuel pump. I am just confused how we ran with no problems on monday and then on friday she wouldnt even fire. Seems odd the pump failed the minute i turned the key on friday which is why i thought maybe the few days she sat was enough time to freeze the pump, grabbing at straws... lol

I had electric fuel pump problems with my 95 davati z225. it has the 350 efi motor in it and it turned out that I was getting low voltage to the pump- found the 100 amp fuse link at the starter corroded. Don't know if this will help you at all but thats what I found. Also found an automotive replacement for the electric pump that was only $141 instead of the $650 for a mercruiser or the $350 aftermarket found on ebay.
    Good Luck

well I replaced the fuel pump again but before I did I pulled the tank and cleaned her out (was pretty nasty) really really glad I removed the tank I found a hole in the floor under the tank. I also cleaned every electrical connection i could get my hands on. we took her out today and it was a flawless outing hopefully this time we will get more than a few hours on the new fuel pump.
