Default 1997 Mercruiser Bravo III

Hi All,

Anyone know what is involved in replacing u-joint between out drive and engine? When I turn or trim up I hear a growling noise...can this be a do it yourself project or does it require special tools? Dealer said close to $1000 for them to do the work...

Thanks in advance!!!!

$1k seems a bit high. I busted the drive shaft last year, replaced the gimble ring, bellows, drive shaft and shift fork for under $1000

Its not that hard, bet there is either a youtube video or online "DIY" free book available.

Sounds a bit high to me too!
You can use a ball joint press for vehicles to do the job.
Sure it isn't the gimble bearing making racket? If your going in there replace it as well. Plus make sure the boots are good.

    Just a thought .

It only makes noise when I turn. I've never had either go out so I'm not sure.

Kinda hard to tell then JMO ,
I'd swing to the gimble bearing , but....
Either way you need to pull the drive. Personally , do them both.
Have you drained outdrive fluid? Any metal particles on drain magnet or in oil as it drains?
You can buy the outdrive maintenance kit for about 200.00 that will include everything but the u joints. Add another 50.00-75.00 for joints and you got around 300.00 when done with new drive oil too boot.
Key is to look for any kind of water intrusion when you remove drive.
