Was your flywheel toast? I'm not sure on my lx gen+ but I think its the same starter that GM had on thier trucks and the starter bolts(all two of them) were notorious for backing off and destroying flywheels.

starter was tight , it wore tha teeth out on tha flywheel i guess over time but i found out u can replace just tha teeth on tha flywheel bad thing is i gotta pull tha motor. i tried a new starter it worked sounded like it had a little bad spot so i decided to replace tha ring gear. it wasnt but 37.00$ and my time. dont wanna take a chance on getting stranded.
