Default Fuel pump - warm starting question

Hello All. My first post. Recently purchased a '99 Shabah 202 with the 5L Merc.
-Carb recently rebuilt.
-Starts fine when cold.
-After cruising for a bit, I stop & shut the engine off for a minute while the kids swap places on the towable. I can start it right back up if I try within a minute of shutdown.
-If I wait more than 4-5 minutes to try to start, the engine will crank for a solid 5 seconds before it fires.

I'm guessing there is no check valve in the fuel system or if its built into the fuel pump, perhaps thats the source?
The decal on the side of the fuel pump is J1171.

Thoughts on above symptoms?

Thank you. -John

The heat from the engine could be boiling the fuel out of the carb bowl or even boiling the fuel in the fuel line, causing a vapor lock.
Do you shut off abruptly or let idle for a period of time to cool things down?

Thanks Steve for the quick response. I'd have to say I lean towards abruptly. For instance, I will slow down from 25mph, come to a stop, idle for 20-30 seconds tops, shut it off while we pull the kids back to the boat. They switch out, I go to start about 4 minutes later and thats when it cranks longer than usual. (I leave the blower going the entire time.)
I hope to go back out this Sunday, I will pay attention to allowing it to idle & cool down to see if that makes a difference.

If what you suggest is the case, I wonder if there is any value in an aluminum carb spacer, heat shield on the fuel line? (typical classic muscle car tactics)

    Thank you -John

Do you have a mech or electric fuel pump? If electric then the issue is most likely the fuel line heating. If mechanical, it could be either the carb or line.
