ran good all weekend. and as rough as the water was it was the perfect test. when i get a day off again i will trace the wire and see what exactly is going on with the breakdown. at least i know it will run. thanks for all the input.

just a thought i just went through this on my boat and i found out that if your tachometer is not working you will not get power to your coil.it is very simple to check just disconnect your tach completely and dont let any wires touch of course and then try starting the boat if it starts you will know that your tachometer is bad. just so you know this is one of the test that the mercruiser shop manual tells you to try if you dont have spark.. Good luck and let us know what you find.

thanks for all the suggestions..... it wound up being the purple wire coming from the igntion switch. the wire is apparently broken down somewhere between the key and the coil. i ran another wire and i have spent the entire week of the 4th of july on the lake with it and it never missed a lick....
