I have a 2001 f-150 5.4L and I get about 10 mpg pulling my z240 which weighs about 5600 lbs. We can usually get 4 trips out of a tank of fuel.

That being said I also have a 1969 Volkswagen Beetle that gets much better mileage.

No criticism intended or implied Dan, I've worked on ships that would burn 200 tons of fuel a day, it's just the thought of the cost of the fuel at the prices we pay on this side of the Atlantic. I'm currently visiting the UK where petrol is £1.35 a litre which works out nigh on $10 a gallon which makes it a bit impractical to run that type of vehicle outside the USA.

I know a guy who drives an 11 car transporter, the tractor unit and trailer (empty) go 23 tonnes, with 11 cars/vans on he is near 44 tonnes and still gets about 8mpg from a 450 bhp turbo diesel, so I guess there's room for improvement.

Anyway, getting back to boats, the SX18 manages 4mpg with fairly gentle use, I love to see what a marinised, modern TDi would do pushing a boat along, I bet a 150/180 bhp motor giving (even just) 15mpg would prove a bit popular.

Lee no offense taken, I can be kind of a smart A$$ sometimes but it is all good. I look forward to chatting with you more about boating in the UK.

I'd rather not think about it
It seems less expensive that way

Looks like its been awhile since anyone posted on this thread, I hopping to get some information, I'm currently looking at two 2000 Mariah Shabah a 258 and a 238, 258 has 7.4 mpi bravo III, 238 has 5.7 f.I. aphla I, these boat are almost identical in weight, any idea if the fuel economy is going to be close, and does anyone think that the 5.7 is under powered for a 3950lb (dry weight) boat

Have a look thru this 'fuel consumption chart'. I'm sure you will be able to get a rough idea of what to expect.

    Joe,

Here is a website that will give you some sort of ballpark. As with all the factors that can go into boating, this is simply a guideline. Boat Fuel Economy | MerCruiser | Mercury | Evinrude | Yamaha | Suzuki | Honda | Volvo Penta Diesel Marine engines

That said, my Z302 with a 502 gets around 2.3-2.5 mpg -- and I'm probably heavier on the throttle than I should be.

I tow with a Ford 7.3 Powerstroke Diesel. Running down the Interstate I get about 11.5 mpg. Have towed with a Chevy 6.0 and got around 9.5 mpg.
