    Title Automatic Fire Suppression/Fume Detector
Description One thing that always scared me about inboard/stern-drive powered boats was the situation with gasoline vapors and engine compartment fires. I was further spooked by the situation with the hatch lifters hindering my ability to get at the engine should it catch fire. Granted, a good tug and the seats in front of the engine will fold forward even with the hatch down (I've had to fold them forward when I've had a dead battery) but still, I thought an automatic fire extinguisher as well as a fume detector would be well worth the money. The automatic fire extinguisher has a manual pull installed on the bulkhead in fron the port passenger seat as well as a discharge alarm mounted in the port dash (no room on the driver's side). Right next to it, I installed the vapor alarm. The detector is mounted down in the engine well, approximately at the same height as the starter selenoid. The alarm has a relay which is wired across the manual blower switch which will turn the blower on automatically the vapor level reaches the threshold. A red light comes on in addition to the horn. You can mute the horn but the blower and red indicator light stay on till the vapor level goes below the threshold. According the documentation, the threshold is 10%-20%. Both the discharge alarm and vapor alarms have test switches. The vapor detector is splash proof and I test it at least once a year by pulling it up onto the floor and holding it next a can of butane. The vapor alarm supposedly also guards against battery gases and exhaust gas...it detects the carbon according to the documentation. Both systems give me a piece of mind but they still don't substitute for the practice of running the blower a good minute before starting the engine or when idling.
